30% of Patients in Israeli Hospitals/Clinics Experience Sexual Abuse

The report reveals that 37% of women have experienced sexual harm from a healthcare provider, with 22% of these instances occurring in the last five years. The types of harm reported include staring, belittling statements, requests to undress, touching, sexual offers, indecent acts, rape, indecent acts under duress, and extortion by threats. The majority of these incidents were carried out by non-gynecologists and gynecologists, with others involving dental health professionals and nursing staff. Most of the harm occurred in health insurance clinics, private clinics, and hospitals.

A concerning finding from the study is that many women were not aware of who to report the harm to. Reasons for not reporting include doubts about the severity of the case, shame, lack of confidence in the system, and fear of retribution. After experiencing harm, many women reported mental or emotional damage, as well as social and physical harm. Additionally, some women reported giving up medical treatment, losing trust in healthcare providers, or changing their approach to interactions following the harm.

The Ministry of Health acknowledges the seriousness of the issue and provides avenues for individuals to report incidents of sexual harassment or harm. While steps are taken based on the law, there is a commitment to investigating complaints thoroughly and responding appropriately. It is essential for individuals who have experienced harm to know where to seek help and how their complaints will be handled.
