After a lengthy battle, Butte Commissioners greenlight ramp for Uptown business

In the city of Butte, a businesswoman had a lengthy battle to obtain permission to construct an access ramp in front of her business. Jamie Decker, the owner of Top Deck Medical Aesthetics and Wellness, persevered through the challenges and ultimately succeeded in this effort. Despite facing initial denials due to right-of-way encroachment and liability concerns regarding the city-owned sidewalk, Decker remained determined.

Since June of 2023, Decker had been working towards securing an ADA access ramp for her business on Granite Street. Her persistence paid off when the Council of Commissioners granted her the permit during the April 17 meeting. The decision came after passionate testimonies from over 20 citizens, many of whom had disabilities and lent their support to Decker’s cause.

Wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the message “The Future is Accessible,” Decker’s supporters urged the council to approve the construction of the ramp. They emphasized the importance of accessibility for the local community and the economic benefits it could bring to the city.

Individuals with disabilities shared their frustrations about the lack of accessibility, pointing out the challenges they face in accessing necessary services. Despite feeling overlooked, they spoke up during the meeting to highlight the importance of inclusive infrastructure in the city.

Commissioner Bill Anderson expressed empathy towards those who feel invisible due to their disabilities, reassuring them that their voices were heard. The approval of the access ramp marked a significant victory for Decker and her supporters, highlighting the power of perseverance and collective advocacy in promoting accessibility and inclusivity within the community.
