Apple Inc. is currently in discussions with OpenAI to utilize the startup’s technology for new features that will be introduced on the iPhone later this year. These discussions involve negotiations on the terms of a potential agreement and the integration of OpenAI features into Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 operating system. Dialogue between the two companies has reopened after a period of minimal interaction.

Despite initial talks earlier this year, Apple is also exploring the possibility of collaborating with Alphabet Inc.’s Google and licensing the Gemini chatbot technology. While no final decisions have been made regarding partnering with OpenAI, Google, or other providers, discussions are ongoing. Representatives from Apple, OpenAI, and Google have refrained from commenting on these developments.

Apple’s next iPhone operating system is expected to incorporate new features powered by in-house large language models and AI software. Additionally, the company is seeking partners to implement a chatbot-like function similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference is anticipated to showcase new AI software and services that offer seamless integration and enhanced privacy protections.

Previously, Apple CEO Tim Cook has expressed interest in OpenAI’s ChatGPT, although challenges remain to be addressed. By collaborating with external partners, Apple aims to expedite its entry into the chatbot space while mitigating potential risks associated with generative AI features. This strategic approach aligns with Cook’s commitment to introducing AI technologies thoughtfully and with due consideration for user privacy.
