Argentina suffers $62 million loss from cancelled flights due to disconnectivity

The national economy stands to lose US$62 million in tourist spending due to the strike called by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) on Thursday. At least 700 confirmed flights have been canceled so far, affecting 90,000 passengers. The Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) expressed its concern about the impact of the strike, representing 160 companies, including 45 airlines that account for over 80% of the region’s air traffic and 94% of the Argentine market.

Argentina will be almost entirely cut off by air domestically and internationally during the strike, with only two airlines operating – low-cost carrier Flybondi, which relocated its operations to Ezeiza International Airport, and American Airlines. ALTA estimates that the daily loss to the national economy from tourist spending alone is around US$12 million, with an approximate total loss of US$62 million per day when considering all income generated by air travel operations.

Aerolíneas Argentinas anticipates a cost of US$2 million due to the strike, while JetSmart has canceled all 36 flights scheduled for the day. Flybondi will operate 68 flights from Ezeiza, with some adjustments due to the strike. ALTA noted that the strike, involving more than 30 companies, will have a significant impact on transportation in Argentina, leading to the cancellation of around 400 flights and affecting approximately 70,000 passengers.

The interruption of air services will not only affect tourism and trade but will also hinder the country’s regional and global connectivity. ALTA pointed out that international tourism contributes significantly to Argentina’s GDP and job market, with 11% of jobs in the country related to tourism. The association called for an urgent and negotiated solution to minimize the economic and social damage caused by the strike, emphasizing the importance of dialogue between all parties involved.
