Children of all abilities in Bedford County can now participate in an adaptive sports program.

A new program in Bedford County is ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to participate in sports. Bedford County Parks and Recreation Athletic Coordinator, A.J. Lacy, created the Bedford County Adaptive Sports Program to make this vision a reality. The program is making a difference in the lives of children like six-year-old Eli Dudley, who is non-verbal and uses a wheelchair.

Eli’s dad, Matt Dudley, shared his excitement about the program, stating that seeing his son have fun and experience the joy of playing sports like any other child is a priceless experience. The program started with seven kids playing basketball last year, expanded to soccer, and has now grown to 25 kids playing baseball this spring. The team is known as the Warriors, and they practice every Sunday with Coach Amanda Craig.

Coach Craig emphasized the importance of the program in bringing the love of sports back to its core – having fun. The emphasis is not on competition but on enjoying the game and creating a positive experience for all participants. Families, like Eli’s, have been touched by the program, with Eli’s dad expressing that seeing his son in his little uniform on the t-ball field was a tearful moment.

The Bedford County Adaptive Sports Program is bringing smiles to the faces of children with disabilities and their families, creating a supportive and inclusive environment where every child can participate and enjoy the benefits of playing sports.
