The telescope is equipped with 56 aluminum X-ray concentrators, each containing nested mirrors that are specifically designed to reflect X-rays into a detector. Positioned in front of the concentrator is a thin filter known as a thermal shield, which serves the purpose of blocking out any interference from sunlight. At the top of the concentrator sits a circular piece made of carbon composite material called a sunshade, which is divided into six segments resembling slices of a pie. The sunshade has been strategically designed to maintain cool temperatures for the concentrators when exposed to sunlight, as well as to safeguard the fragile thermal shields from damage.

Recently, a light leak was identified within the telescope system, prompting further investigation. Images taken revealed several small areas of damage in some of the thermal shields, suggesting a potential source of the problem. However, the exact cause of the damage remains unclear and is currently under investigation. The telescope’s functionality and performance may be impacted by these issues, highlighting the importance of identifying and addressing any damages promptly to ensure optimal operation.
