Hyme Energy, a Danish company, has launched the world’s first molten hydroxide salt energy storage project called Molten Salt Storage (MOSS) in the city of Esbjerg, Denmark. The newly inaugurated facility is like a giant battery that is extremely efficient and capable of storing excess energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar. The project aims to address the challenge of storing abundant green energy produced during peak production periods for later use when renewable electricity production is low.

MOSS works by storing excess electricity in molten hydroxide salt heated to high temperatures, which allows for the storage of enormous levels of energy. Future commercial MOSS facilities could store green electricity in molten salt at the gigawatt-hour scale, offering a sustainable and reliable reserve for when renewable electricity production is low. This stored energy can then be released and converted into steam, providing a green alternative to traditional fossil fuels used in power plants and heavy industries.

The technology has the potential to decarbonize energy-intensive industries by providing a sustainable alternative to traditional energy sources used for heat generation. By storing energy in molten hydroxide salt, MOSS aligns with Denmark’s and global carbon reduction goals. The newly opened facility will undergo rigorous testing to demonstrate its capabilities, with plans for commercialization in 2026 to scale the technology for the global energy market.
