Business organizations rally against Pillen tax proposal ahead of impending vote

As the Legislature prepares for a final vote on Gov. Jim Pillen’s property tax reduction plan, a coalition primarily consisting of business groups is expressing strong opposition. The group, which includes grocers, broadcasters, convenience stores, and others, has written a letter to the governor outlining their concerns. They believe that the proposal will result in increased costs for businesses, as well as hundreds of dollars in additional expenses for the average Nebraska family.

The proposed bill would introduce sales tax on currently exempt items such as pop, candy, and veterinary services for pets. The revenue generated from this tax would be allocated to schools with the goal of reducing property taxes by approximately 22%, according to Pillen’s budget office. Despite receiving a 28-14 vote in favor of advancing the bill last week, opponents are prepared to filibuster if necessary to prevent its passage, as 33 votes are required to proceed in that case.
