Caitlin Cronenberg explores the family’s dark side in her new horror drama “Humane,” wondering if darkness runs in the family like it did with her father David and brother Brandon. With Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, and Peter Gallagher as the stars, the film tells the story of a post-ecological disaster future where a family patriarch enlists in a euthanasia program designed to reduce the planet’s population.

The unique premise of “Humane” drew Cronenberg to the project, as she appreciated the family drama set within a chaotic world. The characters were detailed and despicable yet strangely likable, making for a compelling story. Although Caitlin acknowledges the darkness associated with her family, she doesn’t believe it was something she inherited inherently. She wasn’t exposed to horror films growing up, but perhaps she felt permission to explore a darker side due to her upbringing and family legacy.

Despite any potential family ties to darkness, Cronenberg found solace in collaborating with her cinematographer and crew on “Humane.” Working together to lens each shot and achieve the desired composition, she felt a sense of trust and collaboration throughout the filming process. The film is now showing in select theaters, showcasing Caitlin Cronenberg’s unique take on the macabre.
