Tapping a maple tree with a spile allows its sweet sap to flow out, which is then collected and processed into maple syrup, a prized export of Canada. With over 55 million maple trees tapped each year, the country’s maple syrup production has been on the rise.

In 2022, production of maple syrup reached a record high of 79 million liters, showing a significant increase of 54% compared to the previous year. Over the past 50 years, production has grown seven-fold, reflecting the growing demand for this delicious product.

Despite the impressive numbers, the maple syrup industry has faced challenges due to climate change. In 2023, a warming climate and ice storms led to a 40% reduction in syrup production compared to the previous year. However, industry representatives are optimistic about a return to growth in the coming year.

As Canada’s maple syrup industry continues to thrive, it remains an important part of the country’s heritage and economy. The maple tree tapping tradition is not only a source of delicious syrup but also a symbol of Canadian pride.
