Codelco, the state-owned mining company in Chile, is planning to start exploration work for lithium in the Pedernales salt flat in the second half of this year. The company’s president, Máximo Pacheco, announced this initiative as part of Chile’s national policy on lithium, which aims to secure the State’s involvement in the electric battery industry.

President Gabriel Boric’s government has entrusted Codelco with the task of increasing control over strategic salt flats like Atacama and Maricunga through partnerships with the private sector. However, in salt flats like Pedernales, Codelco will have the flexibility to form alliances with varying levels of participation and control structures.

By expanding its presence in lithium exploration, Codelco aims to strengthen Chile’s position in the global market for electric vehicle batteries. The company’s efforts align with the government’s goal of maximizing the country’s lithium resources for sustainable economic development.
