The Center for Outreach, Aging, Alzheimer’s and Community Health (COAACH) at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is hosting a community cookout and health fair on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event will take place at 2105 Yanceyville St. and is open to the public, with registration recommended.

Local partners will be at the event offering free health resources, dental and health screenings, as well as blood pressure and glucose checks. The event aims to provide valuable health services to the community.

Under the leadership of its new director, Travonia Brown-Hughes, Ph.D., COAACH is relaunching its outreach activities and services that were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The center remains committed to enhancing the quality of life for African Americans and vulnerable communities living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias, along with their families and caregivers through education and community support.

COAACH will focus on promoting healthy aging, engaging students in neuroscience research, and providing support groups and activities for local caregivers. The aim is to address the needs of those affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias in the community.

According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, there are a significant number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease in the state. Many of these individuals may be undiagnosed, and there is a need for increased awareness and support for both patients and caregivers.

COAACH’s core programs include caregiver support, health and wellness initiatives, education and training, community engagement, and research. The center is also a research partner organization of the NC Registry for Brain Health, working collaboratively with other institutions to improve brain health for diverse populations.
