Apr 24, 2024

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning on Tuesday regarding counterfeit Botox injections that have affected 22 individuals, with half of them requiring hospitalization. The cases have been reported in 11 states since early November, with injections being administered by unlicensed or untrained individuals in places like homes or spas. Most people received the botulinum toxin injections for cosmetic purposes.

Health officials have treated six individuals for suspected botulism, a deadly disease caused by botulinum toxin entering the bloodstream. Symptoms of botulism include double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and breathing issues. The CDC advised that injections should only be obtained from licensed professionals and any suspected counterfeit products should be reported.
