Discovering a lost cell phone, even when it’s powered off

One of the key features of any cell phone, whether it be Android or iOS, is the ability to locate the device in case of theft or loss. While Apple has improved its locator feature over the years, Google has been lagging behind. However, Android has just announced a new search method that aims to bridge this gap.

Until now, the location feature only worked if the device was turned on. The new update now allows users to locate their phone even when it is turned off. This is made possible by a battery reserve that maintains Bluetooth connectivity even when the device is powered off, giving users a few hours of autonomy to track their phone.

Just like iPhones, Android phones will now have access to a network that allows for anonymous and private location tracking. This information is encrypted end-to-end to ensure consumer security. The new location network will be rolled out initially in the US and Canada, with plans to expand to other countries, including Argentina.

The update is compatible with Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, and all Android devices running version 9 or higher will contribute valuable information to the location network. Users can now view a list of all registered devices in their Google account, making it easier to track and locate lost devices. Additionally, users can remotely ring or erase their devices if needed.

Overall, the new location network promises to revolutionize the way users find lost devices. By leveraging the power of collaborative tracking and proximity indicators, users can quickly locate their devices with ease. This update is a significant step forward in enhancing the security and usability of Android devices worldwide.
