Dominic Thiem announces retirement from tennis at the end of the season

Austrian Dominic Thiem, who claimed victory at the 2020 U.S. Open and reached the finals of three other Grand Slam singles events, has announced his plans to retire from tennis at the end of this season. Thiem cited concerns about his wrist, which has been bothering him since June 2021, as well as his inner feelings as factors in his decision. Currently ranked 117th in the world, Thiem has struggled in Grand Slam matches since his wrist injury, with a record of 1-7.

Thiem’s most memorable moment in his career so far came at the 2020 U.S. Open when he defeated Alexander Zverev in a thrilling five-set final. This victory made him the first male singles player born in the 1990s to win a Grand Slam title, as well as the second Austrian after Thomas Muster in 1995. Notably, Thiem’s win broke the streak of Grand Slam titles being claimed by Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer for four years.

While Thiem has had successes in his career, including wins over Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer at least five times each, he has faced setbacks in some key matches. Despite reaching the finals of the French Open in 2018 and 2019, as well as the Australian Open in 2020, he suffered defeats to Nadal and Djokovic. Thiem has expressed gratitude for the opportunities he has had in his career, stating that he has achieved things he never thought possible.

As he prepares to retire from professional tennis, Thiem reflects on his journey and the memorable moments he has experienced. With an impressive career that includes a Grand Slam title and victories over tennis legends, Thiem leaves behind a lasting legacy in the sport.
