Today is National Children’s Mental Health Day, and school leaders are taking steps to break the stigma around discussing children’s mental health. State and local leaders will be meeting with Dr. Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, the assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, at Garden City Elementary School on Thursday morning.

Garden City Elementary School recently received a Green Ribbon award from the U.S. Department of Education for their efforts in reducing environmental impact, improving health and wellness, and providing sustainability education. Dr. Delphin-Rittmon will be touring the new school, which includes wellness spaces, and participating in conversations with students about mental health.

During the event, leaders will be sharing resources and support for students, families, and caregivers, as well as promoting intervention within Rhode Island schools. The event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. and is taking place in conjunction with National Mental Health Awareness Month.
