Most prognosticators believe that Wolf & Co. will stay put and select a quarterback at No. 3 in order to bring in a new era. The de facto GM stated that this is an unusual year with multiple quarterbacks likely to be chosen in the top 5. He mentioned on Thursday that he would be “comfortable” selecting one of the top three or four QBs at No. 3, emphasizing that the Patriots are not required to take a quarterback with their first pick.

Wolf pushed back against the idea that the current state of the Patriots roster, having undergone significant changes following 24 years under Bill Belichick, is not equipped to support a rookie quarterback. He pointed out the solidity of the offensive line, the returning key players, the players who are developing from the previous year’s draft, and the additions made to the team. He expressed confidence in the support system in place for a new quarterback within the team.

Despite concerns about the Patriots’ roster, mainly the lack of a standout wide receiver, that should not dictate the decision to draft a quarterback. If the team believes that a particular pick would benefit the team as a whole, it should be made regardless of the surrounding circumstances. Waiting for the perfect situation is not practical when it comes to selecting a quarterback, the most crucial position in football.

If Wolf decides to follow through with picking a quarterback at No. 3, it might not be surprising to see him attempt to trade back on Day 2 to acquire more picks (currently holding selections No. 34 and 68) for the team.
