EU concerned about new app offering 36-cent reward for one hour of Tiktok viewing

The Tiktok Lite app was recently launched in France and Spain, and the EU Commission is now seeking an explanation of the risk assessment conducted by Tiktok prior to its launch. This version of the app rewards users for watching videos and completing tasks, with points that can be exchanged for various rewards, such as discount coupons or virtual gifts.

The EU is concerned about the impact of Tiktok’s reward program on users’ mental health, addiction, and the protection of minors. The commission requested information from Tiktok about the risks associated with Tiktok Lite, comparing it to light cigarettes in terms of its potential addictiveness and toxicity.

Tiktok announced that it would comply with the commission’s request for information and has been in direct contact with them. The commission’s request is based on the EU digital services regulation, which aims to combat the spread of illegal content and social risks online. In February, the commission launched an official investigation into whether Tiktok has violated the provisions of the digital services act, particularly regarding its impact on young people.

The request for information does not automatically lead to a new investigation, but further actions will depend on Tiktok’s response. Violation of the digital services regulation could result in fines of up to six percent of the company’s global turnover. The EU is closely monitoring Tiktok’s actions and their effects on users, particularly in terms of mental health and addiction.
