Five students inducted into National Honor Society for Political Science

Five ULM Political Science students were recently inducted into Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, on April 15. The students included Elenora Franco, Haleigh Lewellyan, Jessica DeFreese, Mallory LaBoeuf, and Melanna Morris, who were honored during the ceremony at the university.

The induction ceremony took place at the University of Louisiana Monroe on April 15, 2024, where the Alpha Zeta Nu Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha welcomed the new members. The keynote address was delivered by David Orr, the City Manager of the City of Texarkana, Tex., who was accompanied by the City Management Fellow, Chiquita Burks. The city is offering internships including a city management internship over the summer where interns will work on economic impact surveys, cost analysis, and assist with projects and grant writing for the Texarkana Arts & Historic District Scale-Up Proposal.

Dr. Daniel Hummel, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Pi Sigma Alpha faculty advisor, highlighted the mission of Pi Sigma Alpha, which encourages the scientific and practical study of governmental issues and aims to promote reforms in governmental machinery. Membership selection into Pi Sigma Alpha is based on academic criteria including GPA, course performance, and completion of specific requirements in political science.

Pi Sigma Alpha is a prestigious national political science honor society established in 1919 at the University of Texas. It serves to bring together students and faculty with a shared interest in government and politics. The society is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) and has over 700 chapters worldwide, inducting 800 new members annually. Pi Sigma Alpha works to promote scholarship and intellectual engagement in the field of political science.
