A recent study has found that Georgia ranks in the top 5 worst states for mental health care in 2024. Accessing affordable mental health treatment is a challenge for Americans nationwide, with more than half of adults with a mental illness not receiving any treatment and over one in four not receiving adequate treatment.

Some states face even greater challenges in accessing mental health care due to high costs, limited treatment centers, and lack of health insurance coverage. To determine which states are the worst for mental health care, Forbes Advisor compared all 50 states and Washington, D.C. across seven key metrics.

Georgia ranks #2 among the worst states for mental health care, with the highest percentage of adults who are unable to see a doctor due to cost and the fourth fewest mental health treatment centers. Other states in the top 5 worst for mental health care include Texas, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi.

Texas has the second highest percentage of uninsured adults with a mental illness and the second highest percentage of youth with depression not receiving mental health services. Alabama ranks third for uninsured adults with a mental illness and fourth for adults not receiving any treatment. Florida and Mississippi also face challenges in mental health care access.
