Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him in charge of the national team beyond the upcoming European Championship and through the 2026 World Cup. This announcement also closes the door on Nagelsmann potentially returning to Bayern Munich, as the club is currently searching for a new coach for next season after parting ways with Thomas Tuchel. Despite being a reported favorite, the decision to extend Nagelsmann’s contract means Bayern will have to look elsewhere for a new coach following two high-profile rejections.

The German soccer federation revealed that its supervisory board and shareholders unanimously agreed to retain Nagelsmann as the national team coach after Euro 2024, as Germany will be hosting the event. Federation president Bernd Neuendorf acknowledged that Nagelsmann is highly sought after by many top clubs in Europe, highlighting his value as a coach.

Nagelsmann, who is 36 years old, has experienced success with the German national team, notably with wins over France and the Netherlands. Bayern Munich had previously fired Nagelsmann in favor of Tuchel in March 2023, a decision that led Bayern to win the Bundesliga. Despite the speculation linking him to other clubs, Nagelsmann expressed that staying with Germany was a decision from the heart, noting it is an honor to work with the best players in the country.

With Bayern failing to win the title for the first time since 2012, Nagelsmann’s commitment to the national team signifies his dedication to the role and the opportunity to continue working with top talent.
