The need for mental health care and services has been increasing in awareness, particularly since the pandemic. Media attention has shone a light on the importance of mental health, revealing the significant number of patients who suffer from mental health disorders alongside other chronic conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes. Studies show that 36.6% of people with mental health disorders also have chronic medical conditions, highlighting the complex nature of these illnesses.

The impact of mental health on the healthcare system is profound, with patients facing challenges in navigating both medical and mental health issues simultaneously. Patients with major depression incur 50-100% greater medical costs compared to those without depression, leading to a heavier burden on the healthcare system. Readmission rates are also higher for this population, straining resources, primary care providers, and the patients themselves.

Clinicians, particularly primary care providers, often feel overwhelmed and overburdened when trying to address the needs of patients with mental health issues. To support these providers, tools and resources are being utilized to streamline care and provide guidance. However, there is a recognition that more support is needed to assist providers in addressing the complex needs of patients with mental health conditions.
