How to Fix the Latest Windows Update That Disrupts VPN Connections

May 2, 2024

Microsoft has confirmed a recent bug in the latest security update package for its Windows operating system, released in April 2024, which is causing VPN connections to be suddenly interrupted in both desktop and server versions. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, which creates an encrypted connection that is often considered more secure than a regular connection.

The company issued an alert notifying users of the issue, stating that Windows devices may experience VPN connection failures after installing the April 2024 security update or the April 2024 non-security preview update. VPNs are crucial for Internet security and privacy, allowing for secure and encrypted connections between devices and remote servers.

While Microsoft has not yet identified the root cause of these VPN failures, they recommend users use the “Get Help” app from the search box for assistance. The affected versions include Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2008 and later.

There is a temporary solution for VPN issues until Microsoft releases a final patch. Users can remove the LCU (Online Computing Units) after installing the combined SSU and LCU package using the DISM/Remove-Package command line option. However, removing cumulative updates also removes all security fixes included in those updates.

Issues with VPN connections have recurred in the past, with Microsoft investigating speed issues and releasing emergency updates to address VPN issues on Windows systems. Windows operating systems hold a significant market share, with Windows registering 68.15% of the market in desktop, tablet, and console versions according to Statista.
