Hubble Space Telescope Halts Scientific Observations Amid Gyro Problem Identified by NASA

In November, a gyro on the Hubble Space Telescope caused the spacecraft to go into safe mode due to faulty readings. The team is now working to find solutions to this issue. If needed, the spacecraft can be adjusted to function with only one gyro, while the other faulty gyro is kept in reserve.

During the final servicing mission in 2009, Hubble had six new gyros installed. Currently, three of those gyros are still operational, with one experiencing fluctuations. Although Hubble is designed to use three gyros for maximum efficiency, it is possible to continue conducting scientific observations with just one gyro if necessary. The team is continuing to monitor the situation and explore potential solutions to ensure the continued success of the Hubble Space Telescope.
