In a variety of challenging tests, artificial intelligence has achieved human-like levels

Artificial intelligence researchers at Stanford University have emphasized the need to redesign tests to challenge AI to become smarter and more advanced. These tests have shown that AI abilities have reached a level comparable to that of an ordinary person in various tasks.

The HAI Research Institute at Stanford University annually conducts investigations on different versions of artificial intelligence and assesses their capabilities. The 500-page review published by the institute in April highlighted that the best AI systems can compete with humans in certain areas or act as assistants in performing tasks.

One notable area where AI has made significant progress is in image classification and text understanding in English. AI can now deduce everyday things based on visual inputs, showcasing a considerable improvement compared to previous years. The level of AI has seen a dramatic increase in recent years, as evidenced by its improved performance in various tests.

For instance, in the Stanford MATH test, AI has made remarkable progress in solving mathematical problems, with Open AI’s AI system showing the ability to solve a high percentage of math problems. Additionally, in tests evaluating the ability of AI to predict and assess real-world scenarios, such as a cat jumping off a table, AI has shown promising results.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain, such as issues with popular large language models still prone to errors like “hallucinations.” AI systems need to further improve in areas like mathematics and design to reach their full potential. Stanford University is looking to develop new tests that can accurately compare AI systems and identify areas where AI capabilities differ from human abilities.

The introduction of new language models like GPT-5 is expected to shape future tests and further push the boundaries of AI capabilities. As AI continues to evolve and improve, researchers are optimistic about the potential for AI to excel in various tasks while acknowledging the importance of identifying and leveraging the unique strengths of human intelligence.
