In certain matters, Finland could benefit from heeding Sweden’s advice

During the state visit, Swedes paid close attention to President Alexander Stubb’s statements on security and defense policy. However, HS Scandinavia correspondent Hilla Körkkö suggests that Finland still has things to learn from Sweden in some areas.

President Stubb described the atmosphere in Stockholm during the state visit as “cold weather, warm atmosphere.” This visit was significant as it was the first time a NATO-Finland president visited NATO-Sweden. The invitation from King Karl XVI Gustaf had been extended to President Stubb since he took office on March 1.

The previous state visit between Finland and Sweden in May 2022 was marked by discussions about both countries applying for NATO membership. Finland ultimately became a member in April 2023, while Sweden followed in March. The security situation in Europe prompted discussions in Sweden about war preparations.

President Stubb emphasized the importance of preparation for potential conflicts, rather than simply discussing the possibility of war. Sweden has taken steps to enhance its military readiness, and Finland could learn from this approach. The visit aimed to strengthen cooperation between Finnish and Swedish companies and promote global competitiveness and sustainability.

Sweden’s advancements in industrial investment and green transition initiatives serve as examples for Finland to follow. President Stubb highlighted the need for collaboration between the two countries to leverage their strong reputations globally. By learning from Sweden’s successes, Finland can enhance its own efforts in various sectors, including the green transition and NATO membership.
