Presbyopia, the common cause of visual disturbances, is typically associated with aging, affecting individuals around the age of 50. Symptoms include difficulty reading fine print on newspapers or medicine bottles. Reading glasses are a common solution for this issue and can be easily obtained in Western countries for a few euros. However, in developing countries, access to affordable reading glasses may be limited, affecting the ability of individuals to work and earn an income.

Recognizing the impact of presbyopia on the livelihoods of individuals in developing countries, an international group of healthcare workers, vision specialists, and sociologists initiated the distribution of reading glasses as part of their projects in 2017. Conducting studies in 59 villages in Bangladesh, researchers found that providing reading glasses to affected individuals led to a significant increase in income for village workers. The cost-effective solution improved the quality of life for many individuals who were able to return to work and support their families.

Results of the study published in the science journal Plos One highlighted the effectiveness of distributing reading glasses in improving the economic well-being of individuals in developing countries. The simple intervention had a significant impact on the livelihoods of individuals in Bangladesh, demonstrating the importance of addressing age-related vision problems in underserved communities.

The study’s findings shed light on the importance of access to affordable vision care in improving the economic prospects of individuals in developing countries. By providing reading glasses to those affected by presbyopia, communities can experience a significant increase in income and quality of life, showcasing the potential of simple interventions to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals in need.
