The San Juan County Council has appointed Dr. Herbie Duber as the acting Health Officer for the county while they begin the search for a permanent replacement. Dr. Duber currently serves as the Regional Medical Officer for Northwest Washington at the Washington State Department of Health, where he helps develop healthcare policy and programs across the state. With his extensive medical experience, Councilmember Cindy Wolf feels confident in his appointment and believes he will serve the community well.

As the County’s Health Officer, Dr. Duber will be responsible for working with local organizations like schools and medical centers to ensure the health and safety of residents. He will lead outreach programs, provide counseling, and educate the community on various health topics. While serving as the acting Health Officer, Dr. Duber will help maintain the health and wellness of the county until a permanent replacement is found.

Council Chair Jane Fuller expressed her gratitude for having Dr. Duber in the interim position and believes he will do an excellent job in the role. The outgoing Health Officer, Dr. Frank James, announced his resignation after 31 years of service at a recent Board of Health meeting. Dr. James’s last day will be on April 20, and his years of dedication will be recognized at a later date. The County looks forward to finding a suitable permanent replacement under Dr. Duber’s leadership in the meantime.
