Israeli Army Intelligence Chief steps down due to alleged involvement in Hamas attacks

Aharon Haliva, head of the Israeli Army’s Intelligence services, has presented his resignation in response to his “responsibility” for the attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7. These attacks resulted in the death of 1,200 people and the kidnapping of nearly 240 individuals. Haliva has called for an investigation committee to analyze the security failures that occurred during the events.

The Israeli Army confirmed that Haliva’s resignation has been approved by Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant. He will continue in his role until a replacement is appointed through an orderly and professional process. Haliva expressed his appreciation for the actions of IDF officers during the conflict that ensued after the October 7 attacks.

Haliva’s resignation marks the first time a senior political or military official in Israel has stepped down due to security failures. Opposition leader Yair Lapid has called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to follow in Haliva’s footsteps and resign as well.
