John Hynes of the Minnesota Wild has been selected as the coach of the 2024 U.S. men’s national team for the upcoming IIHF men’s world championship in Czechia. The event is scheduled to take place from May 10-26, with games being held in Prague and Ostrava. Hynes previously coached the national team in 2016 and 2019 and has just completed his first season with the Wild in the NHL, falling short of the playoffs. With coaching experience also with the Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils, as well as in the AHL with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hynes brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role.

Brett Peterson, general manager of the 2024 U.S. men’s national team and assistant general manager of the NHL’s Florida Panthers, expressed confidence in Hynes’s ability to lead the team to success. Hynes’s passion and energy, combined with his extensive coaching background, make him well-suited to guide the team in their quest to bring home the gold to the United States. Hynes, a native of Warwick, Rhode Island, has a strong connection to USA Hockey, having spent six seasons as a head coach for the national team development program from 2003-2009.

Hynes’s own hockey career includes playing at Boston University and competing in four NCAA Frozen Fours, winning the championship in 1995. His experience as both a player and coach in the hockey world equips him well to lead the 2024 U.S. men’s national team in the upcoming world championship.
