LGBTQ+ Businesses in New Jersey Eligible for Official Certification

Dr. Chris Awwad recently discussed the LGBTQ+ Health & Wellness Center at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus, emphasizing the importance of inclusive healthcare for the LGBTQ+ community. The center aims to provide comprehensive care tailored to the specific needs of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Governor Phil Murphy signed a new bill into law that codifies the process for certifying LGBTQ+-owned businesses, opening up local contracting opportunities and making them eligible for state agency initiatives. This legislation, which builds upon an executive order signed by Murphy in 2022, solidifies the certification program and ensures its longevity beyond his current term.

The NJ Pride Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Director, Gus Penaranda, highlighted the significance of this law in sending a message of inclusivity to businesses looking to invest in New Jersey. The state’s existing certification programs for women, minorities, and veterans have already proven successful in connecting certified businesses with contracting opportunities.

By requiring businesses to meet specific criteria, such as being solely or majority-owned by LGBTQ+ individuals who are actively involved in the company, the certification program aims to boost LGBTQ+ representation in the business world. This effort aligns with the federal government’s recognition of the significant economic contributions made by LGBTQ+-owned businesses.

Overall, this legislation is a step towards creating an environment that encourages LGBTQ+ businesses to thrive in New Jersey, ultimately promoting diversity and economic growth in the state.
