Venezuela’s attorney general, Tarek William Saab, held a press conference on Monday in which he tried to link the opposition to dictator Nicolás Maduro with corruption at the state-owned oil company PDVSA. According to Efecto Cocuyo website, Saab accused leaders of the Primero Justicia (PJ) party, Carlos Ocariz and Julio Borges, as well as two other opposition leaders, Carlos Vecchio and Leopoldo López, of having connections with the former Minister of Oil and former Vice President Tareck El Aissami and businessman Samark López, who were both recently arrested.
Saab claimed that this alleged corruption was not just a financial issue, but also a political conspiracy against Maduro. He stated, “It was not just moral corruption, but also political corruption that led them to ally with the country’s worst enemies.” Ocariz was recently deemed ineligible for 15 years by the General Comptroller of Venezuela, and Diosdado Cabello, the first vice-president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (Psuv), called for criminal actions to be taken against Venezuelan opponents along with political disqualifications.
Julio Borges responded to Saab’s accusations with a statement criticizing the attorney general’s corruption and lies. He emphasized the importance of unity and voting against those who are attempting to destroy Venezuela. Leopoldo López, speaking from an event in the United States, accused the Venezuelan dictatorship of constantly inventing and trying to divert attention from their actions.
