CDU leader Friedrich Merz has pledged to enhance cooperation with Poland and France under a potential Union-led federal government. He emphasized the importance of Germany’s close relationships with its neighbors, Poland and France, given their shared history.

Merz expressed his commitment to Europe, the Christian Democrats in Europe, and Germany. While the Union focuses on national politics, he recognized the significance of strong partnerships within the EU for the Federal Republic. Merz highlighted the need for the EU to not only focus internally but also take on responsibilities for freedom, peace, and prosperity throughout Europe and in the world.

He underscored the importance of the EU developing as a union that looks outward and assumes global responsibilities. Merz’s remarks come at the end of a three-day CDU party conference in Berlin, where he also discussed the Union’s relationships with other European countries. Overall, Merz’s statements signal a commitment to strengthening cooperation and engagement within the EU under a potential Union-led federal government.
