After losing their top two catchers to injuries within 24 hours, the Giants faced more bad luck when veteran backup catcher Tom Murphy sustained an injury in the second inning of their game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park. The game had a 70-minute rain delay, and when play resumed in a downpour at 7:15 p.m. ET, Murphy was injured.

It’s unclear what injury Murphy sustained, but he expressed his frustration in the dugout by slamming his catchers gear. Blake Sabol, who was called up to take Patrick Bailey’s roster spot earlier that day, entered the game in Murphy’s place.

Bailey had been placed on the 7-day concussion injured list after taking a foul tip off the mask in the first inning of the Giants’ loss to the Phillies. With Joey Bart no longer in the organization, the Giants’ catching depth will be tested if Murphy is out for an extended period.

If Murphy is seriously injured, 28-year-old minor league catcher Jakson Reetz, currently playing for the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, may be the next in line to be called up by the Giants. The team will have to rely on their depth at the catching position to navigate through these injuries.
