Oracle has unveiled an update to its database technology, Oracle Database 23ai, with the aim of making it more compatible with artificial intelligence systems. This update introduces “vector search” technology, which allows chatbots and other AI systems to search for data using natural language concepts rather than just keywords or phrases. The technology is designed to streamline the process of asking complex questions with multiple requirements or contingencies.

Juan Loaiza, executive vice president of mission-critical database technologies at Oracle, explained that traditional databases can struggle to understand nuanced queries. For example, searching for a used SUV with specific mileage and color preferences, along with optional heated seats, may be challenging for standard databases to process. The new vector search technology aims to simplify this process and provide more accurate search results.

Oracle will be offering the database technology on its own cloud computing service and through its cloud database partners such as Microsoft. The company has not yet announced a timeline for when the technology will be available for private data center usage. Current Oracle Database customers will have access to the new technology at no additional cost.

Overall, Oracle’s update to its database technology aims to enhance the user experience when working with AI systems, improving the search capabilities and usability for complex queries and data retrieval.
