TikTok has implemented a new measure to automatically flag content that is generated using artificial intelligence (AI) when uploaded from certain other platforms. This is part of TikTok’s efforts to increase transparency and awareness of AI within their platform. They already label content created using TikTok’s own AI effects and will now expand this system to content from some other platforms in order to combat disinformation.

In recent times, there has been a lot of discussion about the authenticity of content, particularly with the emergence of generative AI interfaces that can create text, images, and videos on demand. This has raised concerns about the potential for deepfakes and other misleading content to proliferate online.

TikTok will be collaborating with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and utilizing their technology to label AI-generated content. TikTok is the first social media platform to implement this tool, with the new system being rolled out starting on Thursday and expanding to all TikTok users in the coming weeks.

The decision to flag AI-generated content comes in response to worries expressed by experts and politicians about the potential impact of such content on misinformation and disinformation. By tagging content across platforms, TikTok aims to promote responsible use of AI-generated content while discouraging harmful or misleading content that is prohibited on their platform. Adam Presser from TikTok acknowledges the importance of transparency when it comes to AI-generated content and emphasizes the company’s commitment to mitigating the risks associated with it.
