ÖBB’s aim to enhance punctuality

Despite facing high energy prices, significant inflation, and an economic downturn, ÖBB had a successful year in terms of business. The company transported 494 million passengers by rail and buses, an increase of over ten percent from the previous year. Long-distance rail transport saw a massive rise in passengers from 38 million to 47 million.

ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä expressed satisfaction with the company’s performance, exceeding its long-term goal of reaching 500 million passengers by 2030 in just one or two years. Increased interest from tourists, growing climate awareness, and the Vienna parking permit all contributed to this growth. Total revenue for the company increased by 5.5 percent to 7.8 billion euros, resulting in a pre-tax profit of 111.6 million euros, slightly lower than the previous year due to various factors.

While the company faced challenges such as higher energy costs, inflation, and increased costs for employee compensation and financing, ÖBB continued its significant investments in infrastructure and vehicles. Investments in projects like the Koralm Tunnel, Semmering Base Tunnel, and Brenner Base Tunnel are driving the company forward. Initiatives to improve punctuality and expand freight transport are also a focus for ÖBB.

With an increase in the number of employees and acquisitions like the German local transport provider Go-Ahead, ÖBB is working towards adding 4,500 new employees to its workforce. The company’s net debt and interest expenses are significant, but its various divisions, including passenger transport, infrastructure, and freight transport, continue to generate income.

ÖBB has expanded its international reach, establishing branches in Shanghai and Serbia to support its rail freight operations between Asia and Europe. By providing comprehensive transportation solutions and avoiding certain territories, the company has become a leader in the market for freight transport in Central Europe. Despite challenges, ÖBB is positioned for further growth and success in the future.
