Oracle has released an update to its database technology called Oracle Database 23ai, aimed at making it more useful with artificial intelligence technology. This update introduces “vector search” technology, allowing chatbots and other AI systems to efficiently find data stored in corporate systems. Instead of simply matching keywords or phrases, this new database can be searched by concepts or ideas expressed in natural human language.

Juan Loaiza, executive vice president of mission-critical database technologies at Oracle, explained that the vector search technology is beneficial for asking complex questions with many requirements or contingencies. For example, when searching for a used SUV with specific mileage and color preferences, and considering heated seats as a feature trade-off, traditional database technology might struggle to comprehend the user’s needs.

With this new technology, users can ask detailed questions without the database filtering out relevant information based on strict keyword matches. Oracle is making this database technology available on its cloud computing service and through cloud database partners like Microsoft. The company has not disclosed when it will be available for companies to run in their private data centers.

Existing Oracle Database customers will have access to this technology at no additional charge. Oracle aims to enhance AI capabilities in database systems to improve data search and retrieval processes for users.
