During a discussion with AHA members, Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., expressed frustration over the recent Change Healthcare cyberattack, which he believes put patients and their personal data at risk. He mentioned that the health care sector is a prime target for criminals and foreign adversaries like China and Russia, and highlighted the importance of being prepared for such threats. Wyden pointed out that large middlemen companies in the health care system can dictate contract terms to providers, creating a situation where there is a systemic cybersecurity risk. He emphasized the need for heightened awareness and readiness in the face of potential attacks like the one on Change Healthcare.

In addition to cybersecurity concerns, Wyden also touched upon the issue of supporting rural hospitals to ensure access to care in those communities. He stressed the importance of cracking down on pharmacy benefit managers and their practices, which he believes contribute to the rising cost of prescription drugs. Wyden’s comments shed light on the complex challenges facing the health care system and the need for proactive measures to address those challenges. By addressing issues like cybersecurity threats and cost of care, policymakers can work towards ensuring a more secure and accessible health care system for all.
