Over 100 baleen whales washed up in shallow coastal waters near Dunsborough on the west coast of Australia earlier this week, as reported by news agencies such as Reuters and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). On Thursday, efforts were made to assist the whales back to deeper water. Sadly, a few dozen of the stranded whales have died, but most were able to return to the ocean. Wildlife experts are uncertain about the reasons for whales washing ashore, with similar incidents involving baleen whales occurring in the past.

Baleen whales are known for being very social animals, which can sometimes lead them to follow their fellow whales into dangerous places. In a previous incident, more than 50 baleen whales died on a beach in western Australia. While the exact causes of whales beaching themselves are unclear, researchers suggest that various factors, including human interference such as noises, can disrupt the animals and result in them drifting ashore.
