Eviction filings in Pima County have been increasing, exceeding 10,000 in 2023. The jump from 5,703 filings in 2021 to 12,993 in 2023 is significant. Eric Krznarich, the Presiding Constable for Pima County, attributes this surge to the economic challenges of recent years. Many people are struggling to prioritize their expenses with rising costs of living, making it difficult for some to keep up with rent payments.

The 2023 eviction filings in Pima County were the highest since 2019, when there were 12,427 filings. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic along with the availability of rental assistance programs and the postponement of evictions in some areas have played a role in the increase. However, with many pandemic-era programs now expired and financial struggles persisting, constables like Krznarich and Bill Lake must balance their enforcement duties with compassion.

Krznarich emphasizes the importance of treating everyone with empathy and providing information on social services that may help individuals find affordable housing options. By explaining the eviction process and available resources, constables can often reduce resistance and better support those facing difficult circumstances. As eviction filings continue to rise, it is crucial for officials to navigate these challenges with care and understanding.
