As the weather warms up in Shasta County, it’s important to be prepared for the dangers that heat can bring. Heatstroke Prevention Day serves as a reminder to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Community Education Specialist Christopher Diamond from Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency provided tips on how to stay safe during the hot months.

One of the key tips Diamond shared is to stay hydrated, stay indoors, wear loose-fitting, light clothing, and seek shade when outside to reduce the risk of heat-related illness. It is also crucial to never leave children or pets inside a closed car, as temperatures inside can quickly rise to dangerous levels even on moderately warm days.

In addition, scheduling activities during the cooler parts of the day and bringing outdoor pets indoors can further lower the risk of heatstroke. Diamond emphasized the importance of recognizing the symptoms of heatstroke, such as high body temperature, dizziness, confusion, and nausea, and taking immediate action by calling 911 if someone shows signs of heat-related illness.

Diamond highlighted the importance of checking on those who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, including the elderly, individuals with disabilities, chronic health conditions, those on a fixed or low income, and individuals experiencing homelessness. It is essential to offer assistance and support to ensure their safety during the hot weather.
