Protests Erupt in Georgia Over Controversial Foreign Agent Law Influenced by Russia

In Georgia, thousands of people have been protesting against legislation that mirrors Russia’s laws, which would restrict the activities of NGOs and critical associations. The government had previously rejected this legislation after widespread protests last year. However, the Parliament met to debate the controversial law after intense protests and demonstrations in front of the assembly building that led to arrests and injuries due to police repression.

The proposed Transparency Law on Foreign Influence requires organizations receiving more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as “foreign agents.” This has sparked criticism from opposition groups, protesters, and social organizations who see it as a move to stifle dissent and transparency in the country. The legislation could jeopardize projects funded by the EU and the United States, as well as political and human rights organizations that monitor the government.

President Salome Zurabishvili has been vocal in her opposition to the law, accusing the ruling party of serving Russian interests and sabotaging Georgia’s European path. The European Union has also expressed concerns about the legislation, warning that it could impact Georgia’s accession process. Protests against the law have garnered support from pro-European groups and even athletes, including members of the Georgian national football team.

The government’s push for this legislation has come as a surprise to many, especially after Georgia was granted candidate status for EU membership. The move has raised questions about the government’s commitment to European integration and its alignment with Russia. The international community is closely watching the situation in Georgia, with hopes that the government will reconsider the controversial law.
