Governor Wes Moore of Maryland swiftly applied his military training when the Key Bridge collapsed, emphasizing the importance of checking on his people, establishing accountability, and following up. The collapse of the bridge led to the temporary closure of the critical Port of Baltimore, a significant blow to the region’s infrastructure.

In late March, Governor Wes Moore received a call with startling news about the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsing into the Patapsco River after being struck by a massive cargo ship. This bridge had stood for 47 years as a symbol of the region’s industrial roots, but after the collision, it splintered into pieces, resulting in six construction workers losing their lives.

Moore credited his military service for preparing him for such a catastrophic event, as it taught him to remain focused on accomplishing the mission at hand regardless of personal differences. He emphasized that American patriotism transcends political affiliations, a message he has consistently shared throughout his tenure.

As the state and federal governments work to secure funding to rebuild the bridge, Moore is bracing for the unknown challenges that lie ahead. His experience leading soldiers in Afghanistan has taught him that uncertainty is a constant element in life, making his military training invaluable in times of crisis.
