Regan Smith, who previously entered the NCAA transfer portal in March, is now listed as “withdrawn” from the portal. This status change indicates that she is no longer actively seeking a transfer. Sources close to the situation have revealed that the NCAA ruled Smith ineligible as a professional athlete, leading to her withdrawal from the portal.

Smith, who competed for Stanford Cardinal during her freshman season in 2021-2022, had an impressive performance, winning the NCAA title in the 200 backstroke and placing second in the 200 fly and third in the 100 back. She contributed 53 individual NCAA points to help her team secure a third-place finish.

Following the conclusion of her freshman season, Smith turned professional in the summer of 2022 and began training under Bob Bowman at Arizona State University. Bowman has since transitioned to the role of Director of Swimming at Texas Longhorns, where Smith continues to train under his guidance.

Smith’s decision to enter the transfer portal earlier this offseason made headlines, especially given her accomplishments and potential impact on NCAA competition. By withdrawing from the portal, Smith has clarified any questions regarding her eligibility status, professional athlete designation, and remaining years of eligibility.

In her most recent competition at Pro Swim-San Antonio, Smith showcased her talent by winning the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 fly events, while also placing fourth in the 100 fly. Her strong performances reaffirmed her goal of making an impact at the 2024 Paris Olympics, following her silver medal win at the World Championships last summer.
