Property owners in St. Joseph County are receiving their property tax bills for the year, and some have noticed a significant increase in cost compared to their previous payment. However, it is important to note that this assessment is not final, and property owners have the option to file an appeal if they believe their assessment is unfair.
The St. Joseph County Assessor’s Office has been holding town hall meetings to educate the public about the property assessment process, the appeal process, and new tools available to taxpayers. County Assessor Michael Castellon discussed the Engage program, which allows taxpayers to file appeals in a faster and more informative way. This digital tool streamlines the appeal process, making it easier for both taxpayers and office staff.
As part of the Engage program, property owners must now use the state prescribed Form 130 to contest their assessment. The deadline to file an appeal is typically June 15, but this year it has been extended to June 17 due to the 15th falling on a Saturday. Appeals can be mailed, brought to the Assessor’s office, or submitted online through the office’s website.
The St. Joseph County Assessor’s Office will be hosting one more town hall meeting on April 30 at United Steelworkers in Osceola. This meeting will provide taxpayers with an opportunity to learn more about the appeal process and ask any questions they may have.
