Sangi Co., Ltd, a company known for its oral care products, recently had their remineralizing toothpaste inducted into the U.S. Space Technology Hall of Fame. The toothpaste, inspired by NASA technology, contains Medical Hydroxyapatite which helps prevent tooth decay. The prestigious award was announced during the 2024 Space Symposium held in Colorado Springs from April 8 to 11. The Space Technology Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization that honors outstanding developments in space technology.

Sangi, founded by Shuji Sakuma and currently chaired by him, is the first Japanese company to receive this award. The company is recognized for its high-performance whitening toothpaste brand, APAGARD®, and its long-selling medicated toothpaste, APADENT®. Sakuma was inspired by NASA technology to incorporate hydroxyapatite into toothpaste. NASA’s Electronics Research Center developed a technology to protect astronauts from mineral loss in a gravity-free environment, by producing hydroxyapatite – the main component of teeth and bones. This was achieved through a chemical reaction in the mouth from its precursor brushite.

The innovative use of hydroxyapatite in toothpaste has earned Sangi recognition in the space technology industry. The product not only promotes oral health but also showcases the company’s commitment to merging cutting-edge technology with everyday consumer products. With this achievement, Sangi has solidified its position as a leader in oral care innovation and continues to make strides in developing products that benefit consumers around the world.
