As the spring and summer season approaches, several businesses on Portage Avenue in downtown Sault Ste. Marie are beginning to open their doors. Many of these businesses, including gift shops, restaurants, and popular spots, close during the winter months and reopen for the busy tourist season.

Alicia Krueger, who manages multiple businesses on Portage Avenue such as Fudge Du Lockes and Zak & Mac’s, is excited to start the season and welcome customers back. Last weekend, both Fudge Du Lockes and Zak & Mac’s opened their doors to the community, allowing residents to satisfy their sweet cravings for the first time this year.

Fudge Du Lockes specializes in Mackinac Island-style fudge, made right on the shop floor for customers to watch. Zak & Mac’s offers a variety of ice cream products and sugary desserts. According to Krueger, people are looking forward to enjoying ice cream as a symbol of summer, good weather, and the start of vacation season.

This year marks the 60th anniversary since both shops were founded by the McLellan family. While currently operating on a seasonal basis, the goal is to eventually stay open year-round if there is enough support from the community. Krueger expressed hope that with increased winter foot traffic, the shops could extend their operating hours beyond the typical May to December schedule.
