The Democratic Party is starting to see a shift towards calm after weeks of turmoil, especially as the eve of April 25th and the long weekend approaches, giving off a last-day-of-school atmosphere. With the electoral lists and logo now archived, the PD is focusing on avoiding controversies and internal arguments to concentrate on the results of the European elections. Despite the apparent calm on the surface, the different factions within the Democratic Party are still active as they prepare for the challenge on June 9th, which could shape the future of the secretariat.

While the secretary has not set a specific threshold for success in the European elections, many in the party believe that Elly Schlein is secure in her position even if the results are not favorable. Some see her lack of alternatives as a reason for her continued leadership, while others hint at a potential role for Stefano Bonaccini in supporting her. There are murmurs of returning Paolo Gentiloni to the field, especially as his EU Commissioner mandate ends in a year.

The discussions between Elly Schlein and Stefano Bonaccini have led to the proposal of including the secretary’s name in the party’s symbol, aiming to attract consensus beyond the party’s perimeter. However, this move has not been well-received by all members, with criticism coming from both the minority and majority factions within the party. There are internal disagreements over the direction of the party and its actions, signaling potential tensions as the European elections approach.

The recent vote on the reform of the Stability Pact in Brussels has also highlighted divisions within the PD, with differing opinions on how to approach European issues. Andrea Orlando, a former Minister of Labor, has been vocal in his critiques of the government’s handling of European negotiations, showcasing the internal debates and tensions within the party. With the European elections looming, the Democratic Party must navigate these internal conflicts to present a united front to voters.
