Science Takes Top Spot at State Championship; English & Social Studies Place Second in Academic Super Bowl Competition

The Washington Township Middle School Academic Teams had an exceptional showing at the Indiana Academic Super Bowl-Jr. Division competition. The Team Senator was named the 2024 Class 4 Science State Champions, while the English and Social Studies Teams were named State Runner-Ups.

The WTMS Science Team, comprised of Addison Peres (captain), Jacob Barker, and Kirk VarnHagen, clinched the Class 4 State title with an impressive score of 22 out of 25 questions answered correctly. This was the school’s tenth Science State championship and its fourth consecutive win.

The WTMS English Team, led by Stephen Cannon (captain), Karson Kish, and Liam Swiatkowski, achieved the title of Class 4 English Runner-Up with a score of 22 out of 25 questions answered correctly. Meanwhile, the Social Studies Team, including Addison Peres (captain), McKenna Bouchee, and Karson Kish, was recognized as the Class Social Studies Runner-Up with a score of 18 out of 25 questions answered correctly.

Washington Township Middle School’s Academic Teams have a remarkable record of 24 Academic State Championships in just 19 years of competition, the most of any middle school in Porter County and leading among all middle schools in the state.

In addition, Washington Township received recognition as an Indiana Academic Super Bowl-Jr. Division Class 4 Top Ten school for the 19th consecutive year. The theme for this year’s academic competitions was “The End of the Second Millennium: The 1980s and 1990s.”
